Eminem has officially announced his return in a big way. The Detroit MC, who’s been away from the rap game for quite some time, and Interscope announced that he would release two albums this year.
Relapse will drop on May 19, with the first official single and an accompanying video premiering on April 7. Eminem fans know that “Crack in a Bottle” has already gone to number one, and we should get a video for that song shortly.
More importantly, though, Eminem announced that he will release a second album during 2009.
“A lot of people were expecting Relapse to drop last year,” Eminem said in the press release Thursday. “I was one of them. Then Dre and I went back in the studio in September for a few days, and that turned into six months. We were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff.”
I’ve strangely missed Eminem and his mainstream-oriented music. It seems like the rap industry is in a much better place these days with Lil Wayne, Kanye, Lupe and all of the people who’ve changed hip-hop culture since 50 Cent was huge and Em dropped Encore four years ago. But Eminem is the one rapper that could take the genre of rap to an entire new level. Whether he will is an entirely different discussion, one that we will have after Relapse leaks in the coming months.
Lastly, I want Em back simply because I think he’s one of the only people who can put Kanye in his place and tell him to shut up.
