Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.
It was on November 6, weeks after his Beijing triumph, that 23-year-old Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party.
He was visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl he was secretly seeing who was a student there.
Our source revealed: “Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night.
We’ll learn more and more in the coming days about this story, and the alleged hard-partying ways of Michael Phelps.
But here’s what is going to happen tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 1): Phelps’ people are going to deny the story (possibly threaten a lawsuit). News of the World is going to stand by it. And then people’s personal opinions will be formed based on their opinion on the American swimmer.
While I dislike him, I have three questions to ask about the validity of this story, and the picture above…
- Is that actually Phelps in that picture? (The guy in the picture looks skinnier than Phelps)
- How do we know he’s smoking pot in the bong, and not hookah.
- Is smoking weed a big deal? (Is it worth condemning someone in the public eye?)
What does everyone think?
UPDATE: Phelps says the photo is legit, and he doesn’t deny that it was marijuana. Which is a bit surprising to me, considering how image-conscious Phelps is.
Phelps said: “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
I think that this is the best way for Phelps to deal with the situation. Agree with it, people will talk about the news for a couple days and then the story, one would think, will fade away.
Unless, of course, more bong-smoking/beer-bonging photos pop up.

I don’t think this Phelps thing is all that big of a deal. So what if he was smoking a bong. Like you said, we don’t know if it was actually marijuana in the bong. It could have been flavored tobacco.
