50 Cent’s reality show 50 Cent: The Money and The Power - an obvious ode to Scarface – will not return to MTV for a second season because of poor ratings and, well, because it’s boring.
50′s show attempted to find the next rapper-turned-mogul, like himself and provided the world a wide array of castmembers who seem entertaining on their face. One contestant is a 18-year-old youth counselor. Another is a guy who owns six businesses and raps about banging all sorts of woman.
The rest of the cast is diverse, but the premise of the show is unbelievable. Because, let’s face it, there aren’t many out there who can become rap moguls like 50 Cent or Jay-Z. You first must have the talent, then other opportunities open up – endorsements, clothing line, reality show.
The reality show aspect of mainstream popularity is something we’ve seen with many rappers recently. Xzibit tricked out crappy cars on Pimp My Ride, Snoop Dogg shows off another side of his life on Fatherhood, Diddy’s tried to make three bands so far (only one seems to still be together), and Flavor Flav. Well, Flavor Flav’s show is unwatchable.
Kind of like 50′s.
But MTV is developing 16 more reality TV shows.”Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment,” says Brian Graden, MTV Networks’ vice president of entertainment.”Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves.”
Thank God.
In related news, Real World: Brooklyn premieres Wednesday night. And I, for one, can’t wait to see the binge drinking begin.
